Exchanging Your Money - Buying Euros
Buying Euros to use here in Barcelona can be a hassle. There just are not many places here that offer a decent exchange rate. On La Rambla, which is one of the main tourist areas, you will find Casa de Cambios (money exchange houses) . They will offer to exchange your foreign money, however most offer very poor rates, so i would not recommend using them.

You can check the daily rates of popular currency at this link. This will give you an idea of what the rate should be, however expect to be offered less than these rates, because the bank and exchange have to make a commission. Of course some, will try to make more than others.

I only found one called Ria Money Transfer, that seemed to offer a fair rate. They will give you a better rate if you exchange higher amounts as well, but it usually has to be over $1,000. At the time of this article the dollar was .847 so i should get around 84 euros for $100 (in theory, however they have to make a commission). At Ria on La Rambla, I asked them what was todays rate, they offered me .77 or 77 euros for $100.

A place called Interchange that is on The Rambla just steps from the entrance to Metro Liceu offered me .712 or 71.29 euros for $100. So you can see the rates can vary widely.

So far one of the best places i have found in Barcelona to exchange money is the casino. Casino Barcelona takes a 2% commission over the standard bank exchange rate. Probably because they are hoping you will do some gambling while you are there. They also exchange money 24 hours a day, which is convenient.

The airport is not a good place to exchange your money either, they usually take a high commission.

Always ask the rate before you give them your money, otherwise they may try to offer you a very poor rate. Don't feel pressured if you don't like the rate they are offering, tell them no thank you and walk out. Shop around for the best rates before you exchange. You will need a passport or European ID to exchange your money, so be sure to bring it with you.

Count your money before leaving the window, to make sure you are getting the right amount. Make sure that you get a receipt for your transaction.
